Outcomes at Copa Health

April, 2021

The ASU Morrison Institute conducted a study of the effects of the Copa Health Lighthouse Supported Housing program using cost data from 2014-19 from the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System, Homeless Management Information System and the Criminal Justice system. The analysis was conducted by ASU’s Center for Health Information & Research.  The results indicated a substantial cost reduction when the Lighthouse program was compared with individuals who were homeless.  There was a 28% reduction in cost for individuals who received services thru the program.  When criminal justice costs were included there was a 34% reduction in cost.  The study proves that investment in quality housing, treatment, and supports such as the Lighthouse program can yield significant savings to health care costs.

Our Psychiatric Inpatient admissions per month for the 9000+ individuals we serve continue to be below the national average for inpatient admission is 8%.

We continue to do very well in the AHCCCS Targeted Investment Program and Copa has been highlighted as a high performing provider during three of the last Technical Assistance Webinars.  This is a significant accomplishment since the COVID Pandemic has created challenges in having face to face visits which are necessary for lab draws.

Over the past three years we have worked with over 250 individuals who have been identified as high utilizers of of Hospitals and Emergency Rooms.  Based on the process we put in place we continue to significantly reduce usage for a large majority of this population.

April, 2021: Telehealth

Telehealth utilization continues to increase with over 13,380 telehealth encounters with Counselors, BHMPs and PCPs between April 1, 2020 and March 31, 2021. Our telehealth program allowed Copa to scale and sustain access to care during the COVID pandemic. Patient access is an essential factor of positive outcomes as we leverage technology to better connect our members with their care team.

March, 2020

Our Inpatient admissions are currently at 1.8% per month for the 9000+ individuals with a serious mental illness that we serve.  The national average for inpatient admission is 8%.

Over the past four years of the AHCCCS TIP Program the Copa PIR team has met all of the program requirements each year.  The Copa Team has met all of requirements for the first 3 years and the majority of requirements in year 4.

Over the past three years we have worked with 160 individuals who have been identified as high utilizers of Hospitals and Emergency Rooms.  Based on the process we put in place we have significantly reduced usage for a large majority of this population.

In 2019, Copa Health successfully met targets at the Gateway and Arrowhead locations. These gaps in care include Cervical Cancer Screening, Colorectal Cancer Screening, and Diabetes Screening. In 2019 Copa Health met all three metrics at both locations.
