COPA HEALTH 31 DAYS OF HEALING: Take a Deep Breath

“It’s as natural as breathing.” While the intake of oxygen is necessary, we take for granted the impact the quality of our breathing can have on our mental and physical well-being. Proper breathing influences our ability to regulate our emotions, communicate effectively, moderate stress, and engage in effective decision-making. Consider practicing the following breathing exercise to help improve your awareness and quality of breath:

·While seated comfortably, relax your neck, shoulders and back

·Place one hand on the front of your ribs and the other across your stomach

·Inhale through your nose completely (your stomach will swell against your hand)

·Exhale the full breath through your mouth

·Use your stomach muscles to squeeze as much air out as possible (the hand on your chest should move minimally)

·Repeat this breathing strategy as many times as comfortable, or until you feel calm and alert

Consider combining your breathing exercises with soothing sounds/music, aromatherapy, or a meditation/visualization script to maximize the benefit. Breathing alone cannot fix all problems, but it really can help “make it better.”
