COPA HEALTH 31 DAYS OF HEALING: Mental Health and the LGBTQ+ Community

May 18, 2022, Mesa, AZ: Mental Health and the LGBTQ+ Community.

Research reveals that members of the LGBTQ community are at higher risk for experiencing mental health conditions due to life stressors including being bullied, harassed or otherwise targeted for discrimination.

LGBTQ individuals are especially at risk for depression and anxiety disorders. LGB adults are more than twice as likely than heterosexual adults to experience a mental health condition. LGB youth are more than twice as likely to report persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness than their heterosexual peers. Transgender individuals have approximately four times the risk as cisgender individuals to experience a mental health condition, including considering suicide.

I would encourage LGBTQ individuals, allies, and others to take a moment, breath and see the beauty that the existing diversity of life on planet Earth brings to existence and remember that LGBTQ individuals are a strand of that beautiful diversity. Health and healing start with understanding, kindness, and compassion for others. With those motivations in mind, each of us can lend a helping and healing hand.
